Urodynamic studies allow your urologist to examine and assess the function of the bladder. Urodynamics takes around 20-30 minutes to perform and does not require any special preparation or anaesthetic. The study is performed at either Urology Associates or St George's Radiology.
Please inform us if you could be pregnant or if you have any allergies, particularly to iodine contrast.
Please arrive ten minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time. On arrival, you will be asked to undress and put on a gown. You may be asked to pass urine before having this test. You will then be shown to the examination room where the test will be performed.
A very narrow tube (catheter) will be inserted into your bladder via your urethra, this allows us to monitor the pressure within your bladder. We will then insert a similar narrow tube into your back passage (rectum) to monitor the pressure within your abdomen. When both tubes are in place, we can then compare the pressure inside and outside of your bladder and determine how well your bladder muscle works.
We will then fill your bladder with saline (salt water). We will ask you to report the sensations you feel as your bladder fills. We will ask you to cough or bear down (push down to put pressure on your bladder).
Finally, we will ask you to empty your bladder into the special toilet and then we will remove the tubes.
This test may be slightly uncomfortable, but it should not be painful.
If you have Urodynamics at Urology Associates your urologist is able to tell you the results of the test on the day of your appointment.
If you have Urodynamics at St George's, your urologist will need time to review the test results and plan treatment options and cannot discuss this on the day. You will have an opportunity to speak about the results of the test with your urologist at your follow up appointment.
